Are you getting the below error message when connecting your Hotmail or MSN email address?
The good news is that Hotmail/MSN requires you to enable several security features when connecting to a 3rd party app. Syncing your Hotmail/MSN email with First will require you to create an app specific password to keep your account safe. The bad news is that it will take a few more steps then connecting a Gmail account. In order to connect your Hotmail/ MSN account, please follow the steps below:
- Enable Two Factor Authentication on your account
Log into your Hotmail/ MSN email Account.
Click on the initials in the colored circle in the top right hand corner and in the drop down box, select My Account.
Once you open the Account Home page, scroll down until you see the Security section. Click Update.
Under the More Security Options click Explore.
- Verify your identity
Your email account will require you to verify your identity in order to change your security settings and you will see the following screens. Follow the prompts and have your cell phone nearby to receive a code by text.
Click the grey box to confirm you want to confirm your identity by text.
Type in the last 4 digits of your phone number.
Type in the code sent to your phone number
After you type in the code, you should be directed to your Additional Security Options homepage. If on that page you DO NOT see a section titled 'App Passwords', continue to follow the below directions. If that section is available to you, skip to section 4. Creating an App Password.
- Two Step Verification Setup
Click on Set up two-step verification.
Hotmail will require you to verify your identity with either the Authenticator app, an alternate phone number or an alternate email address. Select an option from the drop down box and proceed with the prompts.
Once you successfully verify your identity. You will see the next screen. Click Next.
Your computer will then prompt you to begin the process of creating an app password. Click Next.
- Creating An App Password
Once you click Finish, you will be directed back to the Additional Security Settings homepage. Scroll down to the section Titled App Passwords and click Create a new app password.
Write down or copy the App password presented on your screen. You will need this password to enter into the First app. For example, write down the gxfmrekuyxvgubho password.
- Enter App Password Into First
Open your First by RE/MAX app and click on the Account tab icon on the Navigation bar located at the bottom of the screen.
Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the Account tab and in blue letters you will see 'Add Email Account'. Click to add your Hotmail/ MSN account.
Enter your email address into the space provided and click 'Sign In'.
When prompted to enter your password. DO NOT enter your regular email password. Instead enter the app specific password you copied or wrote down that was provided by Hotmail/MSN (see picture above). For example, in the password section you would type: gxfmrekuyxvgubho (from the example above) into the password space. Yes, your password is long and hard to type in, but it keeps your account safe and secure!
If you have reached this point, you have successfully synced your Hotmail/MSN account and should see your contacts in the app shortly. If you are still needing additional assistance connecting your Hotmail/ MSN email address, please contact a member of Customer Support.
